Homosexuality was never illegal or a criminal offence in ancient Indian and traditional
codes but was criminalized by the “BRITISH RAJ” during their rule in India. Hinduism
acknowledges a “Third Gender” and has portrayed such identities.
In Mahabharata “Shikhandi” who was born as female, identified herself as male, and then
married to a girl. However LGBT citizens face certain social and legal difficulties, same
sexual activities was decriminalized in 2018. The country has repealed its colonial- era
laws, that directly discriminated against these identities.
